  • Mouth cancer is on the increase with cases up by 50% in the past decade.
  • It is more likely to affect people over 40 yrs old;
  • BUT the number of younger people (16-40) being diagnosed has increased.
  • More than 6500 people are being diagnosed with it every year.
  • Mouth Cancer kills more people than cervical and testicular cancer combined
  • The earlier it is diagnosed the better the survival rate.

The causes of mouth cancer are linked to smoking, drinking alcohol, poor diet and sexual activity. People who both drink and smoke in excess are up to 30 times more likely to develop the condition.

At Hilltop Dental Practice in Cheltenham, our dentists screen every patient for signs and symptoms of mouth cancer as part of our routine dental examination. This includes the inside of the mouth, the lips and the tongue. We also examine your face and neck.

Mouth Cancer symptoms can include:

  • Ulcers which do not heal in 3 weeks
  • Red or white patches in the mouth, throat or tongue
  • An unusual lump anywhere in the mouth, head and neck area
  • Persistent pain in the mouth
  • Pain or difficulty when swallowing
  • Changes in your voice or speech problems
  • Unexplained numbness around your head, neck, lip and mouth area.
